Congratulations
April 6, 2007
Congratulations to Ryan Hendrix, Adam Dunkel and Kristen Garcia for showing a lot of technique, versatility and aggressiveness during the Pan-Ams in Los Angeles last weekend.

Ryan's opponent had the referee's help to win his match in the second round as he got awarded points that didn't exist and not giving Ryan points when he earned them. Unfortunately, there're always referees that are not ready for their function which is why I say, if you want to avoid this kind of incident, just submit your opponent so there is no doubt of who's the winner.

Good showing guys and let's get ready for the next tournament!  pictures below.

My fight at K-1 Hero's Light Heavyweight Tournament.
08/06/06

The fight was stopped by the referee at 9:12 of round 1. I was unable to continue. I took a big risk taking the fight only 48 hours against a very tough opponent, who holds the belt in the 205lbs weight class in England and has knocked out 95% of his opponents in the first 4 minutes. The fight was going as I had planned for the first 3 minutes as I took him to the ground and tried to establish position. However, I gassed due to my lack of preparation and from that point on the fight was his. He's the strongest opponent I have faced but I do not regret taking the fight. My job as a fighter is to take risks and test myself. I appreciate all the support from my fans and I will definitely be prepared for my next challenge to be able to perform at the maximum of my abilities.

Congrats to all students who competed at the Gracie Open this weekend in Pleasant Hill, Ca.

Bobby Martinez won his first match by over 14 points of difference before losing in the second round. Preston Garcia completely dominated his first opponent before submitting him but lost in the second round. Josh Vincelet showed a very aggressive guard game almost submitting his opponent twice but ended up losing by a takedown. Ahmad Masood with only 2 months of training displayed a lot of heart and will be a force in the future. Jimmy Farris, who after being in Brazil vacationing for 3 weeks, found out he'd be competing at the tournament that day, submitted his first two opponents in less than 15 seconds, won the 3rd match by points, losing only in the finals, earning a 2nd place overall...Awesome display by Jimmy who wasn't going to compete at all!

Great job guys and keep training hard, you will only get better!

Royce's comeback to the U.F.C
May 30, 2006

"UFC 60 Royce Gracie loses but Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Wins! When discussing the "secret" to the success of the Gracie Family, Helio Gracie once said, "It is not the Gracies who are amazing people, it is Gracie Jiu-Jitsu that is amazing. This jiu-jitsu of ours is not exclusive to us, anyone who is dedicated enough to thoroughly study and understand it will be empowered far more then they could ever be without it."

After learning the basic concepts of Jiu-Jitsu from older brother Carlos, Helio Gracie spent his entire life perfecting the techniques of what we now refer to as Brazilian or Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Because of his physical frailness, he was forced to develop techniques that relied more on proper timing and use of leverage then on brute strength or explosiveness. Once he had perfected the technique to a certain point, his objective was to teach other so that they could have a realistic chance of defending themselves against a stronger more athletic opponent. His children and nephews, followed the tradition of spreading the knowledge of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in an attempt to help as many people as possible in a street fight situation, and with hopes of sharing these techniques to the world, Rorion Gracie, his oldest son, left Brazil to get established in the United States in 1978.

When Rorion got established in Southern California he realized that there were many forms or martial arts being practiced in the U.S. all of which claimed to prepare the practitioner or student for a real street fight or confrontation. The problem was that because the representatives of these various disciplines never officially crossed paths, there was no way of knowing which style was most effective for a real fight.

In 1993, Rorion Gracie created the Ultimate Fighting Championship for one very simple reason-to answer the age old question, "Which martial art is most effective for a real street fight?" His hope was to give the people of the world a chance to witness, once and for all, the representatives of different styles competing against one another so that they, the viewers, could decide for themselves which styles were designed for sportive competition, flashy movie scenes or a real street fight.

Representatives from all of the most well known disciplines: Karate, Taekwondo, Kickboxing, Judo, Wrestling, Shootfighting, Sumo, etc. were invited to compete in this single elimination 8 man tournament in which one individual would have to defeat 3 others in the same night to be declared the Ultimate Fighting Champion. In order to make each fight as similar to a real street fight as possible, there were no rules and no time limits, the fights would continue until someone gave up or passed out.

Rorion selected Royce Gracie to represent the family's art due to the fact that Royce was not a big strong athlete which would allow the average viewer to appreciate the efficiency of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. He shocked the world when in the first edition of the event defeated all three of his opponents with the methodical techniques of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. What was most amazing is that he did this even though all of his opponents were heavier and stronger then him. Royce went on to win 3 UFC tournament titles and by doing so, he proved to the world that for a real street fight there is no system of self-defense that is more complete, reliable or effective, even against a larger opponent, then Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

Everyone who witnessed what Royce did in the first 4 UFCs, quickly realized that he knew something very special since it didn't seem possible for an average person like him to defeat an opponent almost 80 lbs heavier then him. This was the introduction of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu to the world of martial arts and the impact it had will never be undone.

From this point on, virtually every fighter to step foot in the octagon or in a ring knew that without incorporating the teachings of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu into their current arsenal of techniques they wouldn't stand a chance.

On May 27, 2006, Royce Gracie would return to the UFC after more than 12 years to face the current welterweight champion Matt Hughes. When the bell rang and the fight started, Matt and Royce got into a clinch and went to the ground. Matt was able to land on the side and attempted a K-lock from which he transitioned into a straight arm-lock. Royce, in an attempt to get to a better position, went to his knees. At this point, Matt quickly spun to a back mount and with his hooks in controlled Royce enough to be able to deliver an array of punches to the back of the head and have the referee step in and stop the fight.

The same techniques that were first displayed by Royce 13 years ago and taught worldwide by him and the Gracie family since then, were this time used by someone else against him.

When the fight was over, Royce lost but Gracie Jiu-Jitsu won."

Props to you Royce for coming back to the UFC after so long and facing not only the current welterweight champion, but a very accomplished fighter in this sport.

02/01/06 R.I.P Uncle Carlson...
February 1, 2006

It is with the saddest of hearts that I report that my uncle, Jiu-Jitsu legend Grand Master Carlson Gracie passed away. According to my cousin, his son Carlson Jr, he had been hospitalized for kidney stones and was doing well: 'He was cracking jokes land everything seemed ok. Next morning he had a fatal attack and succumbed!'

I trained under him from 1992 to 1999 and I'm sure my basics as a Fighter and Instructor as well as a human being, wouldn't be the same if wasn't for his influence.

Carlson Gracie was one of the greatest fighters in the history of Jiu-Jitsu, his legendary battle with Waldemar Santana avenged the loss of his uncle Helio Gracie. During several decades Carlson was the defender of the family name.

He created one of the most powerful BJJ teams 'Carlson Gracie Team' and was responsible for many of the top Black Belt fighters and instructors around including most of the founders of BTT like Mario Sperry, Murilo Bustamante, Ricardo Liborio and Bebeo Duarte. Carlson had produced over 150 Black Belts over the years and redefined Gracie Jiu-Jitsu by adding a lot of aggressiveness into his fighting and teaching style.

A friendly and funny man with a great passion for everything he did Carlson will be greatly missed by all that knew him. And were blesses with his presence in their lives. You couldn't meet a nicer and more humble guy in your life.

Carlson will live on through his family, team and everyone that puts on a gi or ever steps in the ring.

Hand Update
June 29, 2006

It's been almost 6 weeks since my hand injury occurred, during my match against Akihiro Gono for Pride Bushido Vol. 7. last May. I still have a few weeks to go with the physical therapy and i should be back on hitting the bags in another 6 weeks or less. My hand still feels week and i can not close my fist as tight as i should, but the doctor seems to be surprised with my recovery as it was a very severe fracture (check old news for hand x-ray). Here are the pictures of my hand, on the day of the fight and today. I can't wait to go back to training. Best Regards,

After winning his first tournament with only 2 months of training, Paul Riley has shown a lot of improvement in his game. As result of this he has been awarded with a yellow belt. Bushido 7 Update
May 25, 2005

As you may have heard already, the decision in Crosley's fight (Bushido 7) went to Gono. After speaking with Crosley, I learned that he broke his hand in the first minute of the fight. This injury certainly kept Crosley from putting forth his best showing for the rest of the bout as he could not make use of his right hand at all. Even with the injury, Crosley pressed the action the entire time whether on the ground, or standing. Gono has some very strong stand up and at one point, he caught Crosley with a right cross that sent him to the canvas, although he was not hurt. From that point on, Crosley pressed the action again, with 2 or 3 takedowns and battled back from side-control and the half guard to end the 1st round strongly.

In the second round, there was more standup action early with the fight again going to the ground due to Crosley's take down. This time Crosley ended up in the mount, although he quickly lost it. At this point, Gono (now in Crosley's guard) begin to throw a flurry, and caught Crosley with a few shots and a stomp. Once fighters returned to their feet a bit more stand up ensued, and the bell rang.

Take nothing away from Gono, he is a solid fighter, and we know Crosley will be back in action soon. Great action - congratulations to both fighters. Check back soon for pictures of the fight.

The hand is going to be operated on June, 3rd and an estimated time of 6/8 weeks will be needed for a full recovery.
Click here for x-ray photo of hand.
