2010 Jiu-Jitsu Pan American Team Results
This year's Pan Ams had over 2800 athletes from all over the USA, Canada, Brazil, Mexico and several other countries from Latin America. Our team traveled down to Irvine, California this past weekend a brought home 5 medals out of 7 competitors. 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 3 Bronze.

Stockton's CGJJA Association Representative Ernest Mello, repeated last year's feat and won Gold in the Ultra Heavyweight Division, this time as a Brown Belt.

Brown Belt Ryan Murphy, also repeated last year's feat and won the Bronze in the LightHeavyweight Master Division, after three matches.

Chuck Walker, also CGJJA Association Representative, won Silver in the Brown Belt Senior Middleweight Division.

Jeff Maurer displayed beautiful technique in the Blue Belt Division and ended up with the Bronze in the Lightweight Senior division.

And finally, white belt Ricardo Urrea, also won the Bronze Medal but in the Middle-Heavy Novice Division.

Adam Dunkel, last year's Middle Weight Gold Medal winner and this year's Purple Belt division favorite, was winning his first match by points, when he submitted his opponent. The move, however, wasn't allowed in his division, so Adam got disqualified.  IBJJF rules have changed and apparently we weren't notified.

Blue Belt Ian Summit fought hard but ended up losing in the first match to the division gold medal winner.

We are very glad to see our team place in several different division at such high competitive levels. Congrats to all competitors and to those who were there to help them prepare these past few months.

Next up is the World Championships in Long Beach on June 3, 4, 5 and 6. We expect to see the same dedication and team effort to maximize our results.

4 Years Since Carlson’s Passing
On February 1, 2006, the fight world lost Carlson Gracie. Hospitalized in Chicago, Illinois with kidney problems, his condition quickly developed into an irreversible and fatal general infection.
Carlson’s influence on Crosley’s training and fighting style is tremendous.
“I trained at uncle Carlson’s academy from 1991 to 1999, before coming to the US. I was lucky enough to be able to train and learn from a few different generations of the highest level BJJ Black Belts of that time. I was able to watch and learn some of the training philosophies that my uncle used to train his MMA students and adapt some to it to my own training experiences.”
Descanse em Paz, Tio. Saudades.

Among the numerous greats from the past, Carlson Gracie deserves special mention. Not only for his achievements in the ring, but also because he is one of the most striking characters in MMA or Jiu-Jitsu, the protagonist of countless epic bouts.

The master had a peculiar way of facing challenges and behaving.   He had the uncanny ability to memorize words in the dictionary and play cards like few others could, loved both cockfighting and French music. Always gesticulating a lot, talking loudly, coming up with theories, nicknames and expressions used to this day, like the famous ‘Creonte’, an adjective denoting traitors.

He didn’t subscribe to ceremony. If you didn’t agree with some result from a Jiu-Jitsu tournament, you’d just invade the opposing team’s dojo. Sometimes he would just substitute the referee. In the ring, Carlson made history. Among his most significant battles was his win over Valdemar Santana – Valdemar overcame his uncle Helio in 1956 – a battle revisited several times thereafter. As a coach, he put together an army of champions of such caliber as Wallid Ismail, Amaury Bitetti, Murilo Bustamante, Zé Mário Sperry, Ricardo De La Riva and Ricardo Liborio, among many others. Check out this classic video of one of Carlson’s epic battles.
